The symptoms of Chlamydia
The number of chlamydia infections has increased significantly in the past 10 years. Many people do not notice any symptoms (around 90 %) and it’s very easily passed on during unprotected sex. If people do notice symptoms, they usually start after around 3 weeks.
These are the most commonly noticed chlamydia symptoms for men and women:
Chlamydia symptoms in women
– Painful periods
– Pain during sex
– Abnormal vaginal discharge
– Fever with abdominal pain
– Bleeding between periods
– Pain when urinating
– Itching or burning around the vagina
Chlamydia symptoms in men
– Painful urination
– Small amounts of cloudy discharge from the tip of the penis
– Burning feeling around the opening of the penis
– Swelling and pain near the testicles
Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics, but if left untreated it causes serious long-term problems.
Long term effects of chlamydia
Chlamydia is one of the main causes of infertility. Many people do not notice any symptoms, and therefore chlamydia often goes undetected. If chlamydia is not treated it can cause severe damage to the reproductive system in both women and men.
– Pregnancy complications
Chlamydia can cause a higher risk for low birth weight, premature labor and inflammation of the uterus. Chlamydia can also result in a condition called tubal pregnancy in which the embryo is implanted in a fallopian tube instead of the uterus. The fertilized egg can get stuck in the fallopian tube, and not reach the uterus. This can be a life-threatening condition.
– Newborn complications
The risk of stillborn (baby born with no sign of life) is raised by 40 % for women with untreated chlamydia. Also eye infections and pneumonia are more common complications during childbirth.
